Description
In ancient Egypt, cats were held in the highest esteem, and were even considered sacred. They were believed to have great power and were often depicted in art and hieroglyphics. The goddess Bastet, goddess of home, fertility, and childbirth was depicted as a lioness and was considered the protector of the home, often depicted as the companion of the goddesses. Killing a cat, even by accident, was considered a crime punishable by death. In fact, owning a cat was a symbol of wealth and status, and the wealthy would often keep them as prized possessions. The reverence for cats in ancient Egypt was so great that when a cat died, the entire household would go into mourning as if they lost a family member.
